STI Foundation Theory Course Director

Who can be a STI Foundation Theory Course Director?

Specifications for registering as a STI Foundation Course Director:

Sexual Health/Genitourinary Medicine (GUM/Sexual Health) Consultants (Medical or Nursing)

  1. Member of BASHH
  2. Diploma in Genitourinary Medicine
  3. Formal training in teaching, assessment and/or mentoring skills
  4. Has attended STI Foundation course and has facilitated on the STI Foundation course

 Doctors who are not Sexual Health/ GUM Consultants or who are Consultants in specialties other than GUM  (these may be GUM Associate Specialists, hospital practitioners, sexual and reproductive health trained doctors)

  1. Member of BASHH
  2. Diploma in Genitourinary Medicine
  3. 4 years of full time equivalent working experience within a Level 3 GUM service
  4. Currently working a minimum of 2 sessions per week (seeing men and women) in a Level 3 GUM service as an associate specialist (in GUM) or specialty doctor above threshold 2 (in GUM) or as a Consultant in a specialty other than GUM
  5. Formal training in teaching, assessment and/or mentoring skills
  6. Has attended STI Foundation course and has facilitated on a STI Foundation course

- if in doubt about meeting the specification, approval to be a Course Director must be given by the STI Foundation Steering Group and application in writing can be made to the STI Foundation Secretariat stif@bashh.org

Course centres must have a Course Director who is fully involved in the organisation and delivery of the entire course.  He/she should be present throughout the course to provide feedback especially during breaks and at the beginning and end.

The course may be organised by another individual (course organiser) who does not have to be a Consultant in Sexual Health Medicine but there must be a named Consultant (See above) as course director who is responsible for ensuring that the course fully complies with all regulations.  Where the regulations are not met, the STI Foundation Steering Group  may retrospectively withdraw course approval. Courses may be visited to ensure quality assurance.
